Most people search "sports massage near me" and book whatever slot is open. That works for relaxation. It fails for athletes because sports massage is four different clinical intents, not one pressure setting.

Quick answer

The four types of sports massage are pre-event, post-event, maintenance, and rehabilitation. Pre-event activates tissue before competition. Post-event clears soreness 24–48 hours after heavy load. Maintenance prevents small restrictions becoming injuries. Rehabilitation supports healing alongside physiotherapy.

At R3BOOT Dadar and Lower Parel, we select the type at intake based on your calendar: what you trained yesterday, what you are racing toward, and whether something is injured or just overloaded. Mumbai heat and humidity add a fifth variable — tissue dehydration and cramping risk — which changes how aggressive post-event work should be.

The four types of sports massage are defined by purpose and timing, not simply by pressure.

What is pre-event sports massage?

Pre-event massage should leave the athlete feeling prepared, not sore.
Pre-event massage should leave the athlete feeling prepared, not sore.

Pre-event sports massage uses light, brisk strokes and compressions to increase blood flow and reduce pre-competition tightness without creating soreness. Book 48–72 hours before your event, not the morning of. Deep tissue or heavy trigger-point work within 24 hours of start time can reduce power output.

Pre-event work targets the muscle groups under highest load in your sport: calves and glutes for runners, quads and lats for HYROX, posterior shoulder and forearms for cricket or racquet sports. The session should leave you feeling looser and switched on, not tender.

In Mumbai marathon and triathlon season, we see athletes book deep tissue the day before a race because legs "feel tight." That tightness is often nervous-system driven, not fascial. Light circulatory work and mobility drills are the correct pre-event response.

Marathon timing rules: when runners should get sports massage before or after a race.

What is post-event sports massage?

Post-event massage is timed around recovery, with more intensive work generally delayed until the acute phase has settled.
Post-event massage is timed around recovery, with more intensive work generally delayed until the acute phase has settled.

Post-event sports massage focuses on clearing metabolic waste and reducing DOMS from the muscle groups that took the highest load. Book 24–48 hours after competition or a maximal training session. Avoid aggressive deep work on race day — acute inflammation is still doing repair work.

Post-HYROX and post-marathon, we typically work quads, calves, glutes, and lats in that order. Session length of 45 minutes is often sufficient when the type is matched correctly. Longer is not automatically better if tissue is still in acute inflammatory phase.

If you finished a race after 6pm and sleep is the priority, skip same-night massage. Hydrate, eat, walk 20 minutes, sleep. Book Day 2 post-event work when DOMS is climbing but tissue is past the acute window.

What is maintenance sports massage?

Rehabilitation massage supports recovery alongside progressive loading and physiotherapy, it does not replace either.
Rehabilitation massage supports recovery alongside progressive loading and physiotherapy, it does not replace either.

Maintenance sports massage is scheduled tissue work during an active training block — typically every 2–3 weeks for recreational athletes, weekly or biweekly during peak marathon or HYROX prep. It addresses small restrictions before they become injuries and is the most impactful type for regular gym-goers.

Maintenance is not "the same massage every time." Each session follows a quick movement screen: where is asymmetry showing up, which side is tighter, what changed since last visit. That determines whether we use trigger-point release, myofascial work, or cupping on a given day.

Desk-loaded Mumbai professionals benefit from maintenance focused on upper traps, levator scapulae, hip flexors, and QL — the tissues that stiffen from 10-hour sitting blocks even if you train in the evening.

What is rehabilitation sports massage?

Rehabilitation sports massage supports recovery from soft-tissue injury under physiotherapy supervision. It targets scar tissue mobility, gradual load tolerance, and local circulation — not forcing range or digging into acute inflammation. Book only after acute phase (first 48–72 hours) and with physio clearance.

Common rehab presentations at R3BOOT: post-ankle sprain calf restriction, post-rotator cuff tendinopathy posterior shoulder guarding, post-hamstring strain fascial thickening. Massage complements progressive loading; it does not replace it.

If pain is sharp, radiating, or worsening with load, stop booking massage and get a physiotherapy assessment first. Red flags include numbness, night pain, and swelling that is not improving after 72 hours.

How much does sports massage cost in Mumbai at R3BOOT?

Sports massage at R3BOOT is ₹3,500 for men and ₹2,500 for women. Sessions run 60–90 minutes and include assessment, clinical bodywork, and cupping or mobility work where indicated. Tipping is not expected in India; book by WhatsApp +91 97023 68612.

Price should be weighed against who performs the session. Clinical sports massage starts with movement screening and is adjusted for training phase. Spa massage starts with a pressure preference form. The cost difference between the two is smaller than the outcome difference for active bodies.
