How Normatec Compression Therapy Works at R3BOOT (What a Session Actually Does)

Most people who type "compression therapy" in India are not looking for the same thing. Google mixes Normatec boots, compression stockings, ice-and-compression knee cuffs, and even spinal cord compression, a medical diagnosis, not a recovery session.

This article is only about sequential air compression as we run it at R3BOOT Dadar: Normatec 3 Full Body, screened by the recovery team, used for training load. Written by Dr Vaishali Vijay Rauniyar, physiotherapist. Last updated September 2026.

Clinical summary

At R3BOOT, Recovery is a standalone 45-minute Normatec session (₹1,500): sequential air pulse from the extremities toward the core, on legs, hips, and arms, 15 minutes each. Activation is a 15-minute add-on (₹500 additional, 5 minutes per limb) only with Contrast Therapy, Hydro Active Recovery, or Physiotherapy. It helps congested, heavy tissue after training. It does not treat clots, ulcers, nerve pain, or a compressed spinal cord.

If your legs feel swollen and tired after a session, book Recovery. If one joint is sharp, you are limping, or swelling is new and one-sided, book physiotherapy instead.

What is compression therapy, and what is it not?

At R3BOOT it means intermittent pneumatic compression: overlapping air chambers inflate in sequence on a Normatec 3 Full Body system. It is not compression stockings, not a spa squeeze, and not "hot and cold compression" for a knee brace.

India search data bunches those products under one phrase. "Hot and cold compression therapy" and "cold compression therapy" are usually ice-cuff machines for a single joint after surgery. "Compression therapy socks" are garments. "Spinal cord compression therapy" is a spinal condition. None of those is the session on our floor.

We use boots because they cover a whole limb with a pulse, not because they replace medical compression prescribed for veins or lymphoedema. If a doctor has you in Class 2 stockings, keep that plan. Do not swap it for a gym recovery boot without asking them.

How does Normatec compression therapy work?

Chambers inflate from distal to proximal: foot toward hip, hand toward shoulder, then hold and release. That pulse is designed to move blood and interstitial fluid, not crush the whole limb at one pressure.

Legs and arms have five overlapping zones so there is no pressure gap between chambers. Hips have two. Pressure runs across seven levels. ZoneBoost adds time and pressure on one stubborn zone (calf, quad, hip pocket) without turning the entire session to maximum.

You stay still. You do not stretch, foam-roll, or chat through pain. Most people read or rest. The clinical point is the sequence, not how hard it feels.

People ask if they should "feel it working." You should feel a firm, travelling squeeze, not pins and needles, not breathlessness, not pain in one joint. If the last two show up, we stop and rescreen.

What happens in a 45-minute session at R3BOOT?

Screening and fit, then a ₹1,500 Recovery session: 15 minutes upper limbs, 15 minutes hips, 15 minutes lower limbs. Attachments unzip after a short deflate. You leave in the same clothes you arrived in.

First visit: we ask about training load, swelling, clots, heart issues, infection, and open wounds. If pneumatic compression is not appropriate, we say so and point you to physiotherapy or rest.

Fit matters. Loose boots skip tissue. Pinching boots bruise. Wear shorts or tights with empty pockets. No jewellery digging under an arm sleeve.

Activation is different: ₹500 additional for a 15-minute session, 5 minutes per limb, only as an add-on next to Contrast Therapy, Hydro Active Recovery, or Physiotherapy. It is a warm-up pulse, not a full flush. Do not book Activation alone.

Compression therapy for legs, hips, and arms: why full body?

Most consumer boots stop at the legs. Search volume follows that: "compression therapy for legs" is the common query. Training does not. HYROX, lifting, and racquet sports load hips and arms too.

If you only inflate calves after a squat session, you leave the hips congested. If you rowed or did farm carries, arms hold the same stale fluid. Full Body means those attachments exist on the same control unit, not that every client uses maximum pressure everywhere.

Tell us which session you just did. We bias time and ZoneBoost to the tissue that actually worked.

How often should you use compression therapy?

After hard lower-body or race days, one Recovery session in the 24–48 hour window is enough for most people. Daily boots on easy weeks do not make you fitter. They also do not replace sleep or protein.

If you train six days a week in Mumbai heat, a Recovery session on the heaviest day plus rest is more useful than squeezing boots in because the machine is free. If you still cannot walk stairs the morning after, that is DOMS or injury, not a sign to raise the pressure.

Soreness that peaks two days later is usually DOMS. Read why you are still sore after training before you assume the boots failed.

Is compression therapy safe?

For screened healthy adults, yes. Do not use it with known or suspected DVT, pulmonary embolism, decompensated heart failure, acute infection or cellulitis, untreated wounds in the treatment area, severe peripheral arterial disease, or active thrombophlebitis.

People also search "can compression therapy cause blood clots." Pneumatic compression is used in hospitals to reduce clot risk in immobile patients. That is not a reason to ignore a calf that is hot, red, and one-sided. That presentation is a medical emergency, not a recovery booking.

Pregnancy, uncontrolled blood pressure, and recent surgery need a clinician to clear you first. We will not put you in boots to be polite.
