When should you use an ice bath?

Use an ice bath after a competition, marathon, match, or one-off maximal event when soreness control is the priority. It also suits back-to-back tournament or race days when you need legs back quickly. For endurance events, immersion within 1–2 hours post-finish can help; wait 3–6 hours or skip after heavy squats.
A 10-minute cold session 1–2 hours before bed can support parasympathetic downshift for sleep in some athletes. That is a different use case from post-training recovery and should not replace contrast therapy during a training block.
Do not use full immersion for acute strains in the first 48 hours. Local ice on the injury site is the correct approach until a clinician clears full-body cold exposure.
When should you use contrast therapy?
Use contrast therapy during an active training block when you need recovery between sessions without blunting gains. The optimal window is 24–72 hours after heavy training, when stiffness and mobility loss matter more than maximal soreness suppression. First-time cold exposure is safer through contrast with shorter cold phases under supervision.
Contrast therapy is not a replacement for physiotherapy on structural injuries. If pain is undiagnosed or worsening, get assessed before booking either method.

Can you do contrast therapy at home?

You can approximate contrast therapy at home with 3–4 minutes warm shower (38–40°C) and 1 minute cold (10–15°C), repeated 3–5 times. End Day-style sessions on cold and Night-style sessions on hot if using contrast before sleep. Home showers offer less thermal transfer than full immersion and no blood pressure screen or coached breathing.
