If you train in Mumbai and search "sauna benefits" or "sauna near me," you will mostly find spa listings and home sauna retailers. This article is different: a physiotherapist-led guide to what dry heat and red light actually do in the body, what peer-reviewed longevity research can and cannot tell us, and how we use Red Light Sauna clinically at R3BOOT Dadar as part of contrast therapy.

What is a sauna and how does sauna therapy work in the body?
A sauna uses dry heat to raise skin and core temperature. Blood vessels dilate, heart rate increases modestly, and sweat carries heat to the surface. Red light and near-infrared add photobiomodulation: light energy absorbed by mitochondria may support cellular repair, separate from the heating effect alone.
The phrase "detox through sweat" overstates the science. Sweat is thermoregulation. The clinically useful outcomes are cardiovascular and musculoskeletal: better perfusion, reduced stiffness, and nervous-system down-regulation when heat is used deliberately.

In contrast therapy, the physiologically interesting moment is not only vasodilation during heat. It is the repeated switch to vasoconstriction during cold. That oscillation moves fluid and metabolic byproducts through muscle faster than either phase alone.
What the research shows
A 2018 systematic review in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine summarises clinical effects of regular dry sauna bathing, including improvements in blood pressure, arterial stiffness, and subjective well-being. Effects are dose-dependent: frequency and session length matter.

What are the benefits of sauna and red light sauna therapy?

Evidence-supported benefits include improved circulation, reduced muscle soreness perception, lower stress markers in some trials, and cardiovascular adaptations with habitual use. Red light may add mitochondrial support. Sauna alone is not a fat-loss tool: sweat weight returns with hydration.
Longevity researchers have focused heavily on Finnish sauna culture because decades of cohort data exist there. Those studies are informative for population health, but they describe people who sauna several times per week for years, not a single spa visit after leg day.
For Mumbai athletes, the practical benefit we see in clinic is consistency: supervised heat and cold between hard sessions so you can train again without stacking unsupervised recovery hacks that work against your programming.
What the research shows
Laukkanen et al. (JAMA Internal Medicine, 2015) followed 2,315 Finnish men for two decades. Men who used sauna four to seven times per week had lower fatal cardiovascular event rates than those who used sauna once per week. This is association, not proof that sauna alone prevents disease, but it underpins why cardiovascular researchers take heat exposure seriously. The NIH summarised the finding for a general audience.

What the research shows
Near-infrared and red light mechanisms are reviewed by Hamblin (PMC, 2017). Photobiomodulation may support mitochondrial function and tissue repair. We combine this with dry heat because athletes need both vascular and tissue-level warming before cold immersion, not a low-temperature wellness booth.
What Raymond Francis says about sauna in Never Be Sick Again
Raymond Francis, an MIT-trained chemist who recovered from severe chemical illness and wrote Never Be Sick Again, places sauna inside his broader "toxin pathway" framework. His model argues there is one disease (cell malfunction), two causes (deficiency and toxicity), and six pathways to health. Sauna is his third step for clearing toxins already stored in the body, after reducing new exposure and supporting detox nutrition.

In the Toxin Pathway chapter and related writing, Francis argues that modern petroleum-era chemicals bioaccumulate in tissue faster than historical lifestyles allowed us to clear them. He recommends regular hyperthermic sweating because heat mobilises fat-soluble compounds through skin lipids, not only water-soluble waste in sweat. He prefers dry and infrared saunas over steam rooms because lower ambient humidity lets people stay longer, which he considers important for oil-soluble release. He also stresses washing with mild soap immediately after so sweat-bound compounds are not reabsorbed.

How long should you stay in a sauna, and at what temperature?
Public guidance for traditional Finnish saunas often cites 15–20 minutes per round at 80–100°C. At R3BOOT, sauna phases are embedded in a Half Cycle (30 minutes total) or Full Cycle (60 minutes) with ice bath alternation at a fixed 68°C Red Light Sauna temperature.

Duration is not self-selected. Your physiotherapist adjusts phase length from blood pressure response, cold tolerance, and whether you are on a Day Cycle (ends cold) or Night Cycle (ends hot). First visits almost always start with a Half Cycle.
Francis recommends building gradually toward longer infrared sessions over weeks. That gradual ramp mirrors how we introduce cold tolerance, but our ceiling is protocol time (30 or 60 minutes total with ice bath), not an open-ended 90-minute solo sauna.

Is sauna good after a workout?
After moderate aerobic work, brief heat can support relaxation if you are rehydrated. After heavy hypertrophy sessions, recovery timing should protect adaptation signalling. Contrast therapy 24–72 hours later often fits active strength blocks better than immediate post-lift heat alone.
Endurance athletes after races may use heat and cold sooner for soreness control once fluids are replaced. Strength athletes should treat same-day heat and cold as programming decisions, not spa habits.
What the research shows
Roberts et al. (Journal of Physiology, 2015) showed habitual post-strength cold water immersion reduced muscle mass gains over 12 weeks. Heat does not carry identical risk, but stacking multiple recovery modalities same-day without intent can still blunt the training signal you need.
What are the risks of sauna therapy, and who should avoid it?

Primary risks are dehydration, orthostatic hypotension, overheating, and cardiovascular strain in unscreened users. Sauna suits for weight cutting and extreme home heat are not clinical tools. Pregnancy, uncontrolled hypertension, active heart disease, and acute infection require clearance.
Finnish longevity data does not cancel individual contraindications. A population association in healthy sauna users does not mean heat is safe during an acute fever or unstable angina.
