Can you book a sports massage with a female therapist in Mumbai? Yes, and more women are asking for one. Walk along Marine Drive or Shivaji Park on a Sunday morning, look at a HYROX start line, or count the women lifting at any Mumbai gym, and it is obvious that women are training harder than ever. Recovery has not always kept up. Many women skip sports massage because they are not comfortable with a male therapist, are unsure what to wear, or assume it is only for professional athletes.

This guide answers the questions women actually ask us before booking, including one Gemini is asked about Mumbai directly: which sports massage centres let you choose a male or female therapist?

Written by the R3BOOT Dadar sports massage team with Vaishali Sonar, our women’s sports massage specialist (Cupping Therapy Level 1 and 2 certified), and Akshay Anil Nalawde. Last updated September 2026.

Yes. Ask for a female therapist when you book; good clinics will arrange it without fuss. At R3BOOT Dadar, women who prefer a female therapist are treated by Vaishali Sonar, a Cupping Level 1 and 2 certified women’s sports massage specialist. Sessions are 60 to 90 minutes, cost ₹2,500, and you wear a sports bra and shorts or leggings throughout.

Quick answer

You do not need a reason to prefer a female therapist. Comfort matters, and you relax better when you trust the person working on you, which also makes the massage work better. Sports massage techniques are the same for women and men. What changes is the assessment: your training, common female load patterns, where you are in your cycle, pregnancy or postpartum status, and a few injury risks that are higher in women.

Why many women prefer a female therapist

Sports massage often means work on glutes, hip flexors, inner thighs, upper back and chest muscles. For a lot of women, that is easier with another woman. It is also easier to mention period pain, pelvic floor issues, postpartum changes or body image worries to someone who gets it without a long explanation.

“A lot of women tell me it is their first sports massage, even though they have been running or lifting for years. They waited because they were not comfortable. Once you can relax on the table, I can work deeper where it is needed, and the session does far more.”

Vaishali Sonar, Women’s Sports Massage Specialist, R3BOOT

Preferring a male therapist is equally fine. The point is that you choose.

Is sports massage different for women?

The techniques are the same. The assessment is where it differs. A good therapist asks about your training, cycle, pregnancy or postpartum status, and watches for patterns and injury risks that are more common in women, such as hip and knee control issues, bone stress injuries in runners, and upper back stiffness from desk work plus lifting.

We want to be honest here. There is no special “women’s massage technique.” Anyone claiming that is selling. What matters is a therapist who knows what to look for and adapts pressure, positioning and advice to you.

Patterns we see often in women who train

Hips, glutes and knees

Runners, HYROX athletes and field-sport players often arrive with tight hip flexors, overworked outer hips and knees that ache on stairs or downhill runs. Female athletes also have a higher rate of ACL injuries than men in cutting and landing sports. Massage can ease tight tissue around the hips and thighs, but hip and knee control comes from strength work. If a knee feels unstable, gives way or swells, see a physiotherapist before booking a massage.

Calves, shins and feet in runners

Calves and plantar fascia take a beating during a marathon block. One important caution: female runners have a higher risk of bone stress injuries. Pain on a specific spot of the shin or foot that gets worse as you run, or hurts when you press on the bone, is not a massage problem. Stop running on it and get it checked.

Neck, upper back and shoulders

Corporate women who sit through a long workday and then lift or run in the evening often carry thoracic stiffness, neck spasm and tight upper traps. This is one of the most common reasons women book with us. Both the desk load and the training load get addressed in the same session.

“The most common combination I see is a stiff upper back from the laptop and tight hips from training, in the same person, on the same day. Working on just one of them misses half the picture.”

What should a woman wear to a sports massage?

Wear a sports bra and shorts or leggings, or bring them to change into. Loose shorts make thigh and hip work easier than tight leggings. You can keep the sports bra on for upper back and shoulder work. The therapist uncovers or drapes only the area being worked on, and glute work can be done over shorts or with draping. You never need to fully undress for a sports massage at R3BOOT.

  • Sports bra and loose shorts are ideal; leggings are fine for upper-body sessions
  • Tell the therapist any area you want skipped; you do not need to explain why
  • You can ask to stop, change pressure or re-drape at any point
  • Tie long hair up for neck and shoulder work

Can I get a sports massage during my period?

Yes, if you feel up to it. Some women find pressure less comfortable in the days just before or during their period, especially around the lower back, abdomen and hips. Tell your therapist so pressure can be adjusted. Rescheduling is also completely fine. There is no medical reason to avoid sports massage during your period.

Some women also notice they feel stiffer, more bloated or more sensitive at certain points in their cycle. It helps to mention where you are in your cycle during the intake, not because it changes the plan dramatically, but because it helps us read what we find.

Pregnancy and postpartum

If you are pregnant, tell us when you book and get clearance from your doctor first. Pregnancy changes positioning, pressure and which areas should be avoided. Depending on your trimester and symptoms, we may adapt the session or suggest a physiotherapist instead.

After childbirth, many women want to get back to running or lifting quickly. Massage can help with neck and upper back strain from feeding and carrying, and with general stiffness. But leaking, heaviness in the pelvis, abdominal separation or pain returning to running are signs you need a physiotherapist assessment first, not just massage.

A note on under-fuelling and frequent injuries

If you are training hard and keep picking up injuries, especially bone stress injuries, and your periods have become irregular or stopped, talk to a doctor. This pattern can be linked to Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs), where the body is not getting enough energy for the training load. Massage can make you feel better, but it cannot fix this.

What the research shows

The International Olympic Committee’s 2023 consensus statement on REDs describes how low energy availability affects menstrual function, bone health and injury risk in athletes. It applies to recreational athletes too, not only professionals.

When should a woman see a physio instead of booking a massage?

See a physiotherapist first for sharp or radiating pain, numbness or tingling, a knee that gives way or swells, pinpoint bone pain in the shin or foot, pelvic floor symptoms such as leaking or heaviness, or pain returning to exercise after childbirth. Sports massage helps tight, overworked muscles. It does not replace diagnosis.
